This nine-week course combines book discussion, report writing, and public speaking. Students will read a book of their choice, participate in class discussion, and learn how to pull information into an interesting written book report following the writing process. They will be led every step of the way.
Students will then explore creative ways to turn their written book report into an interesting presentation, and will have their turn presenting their own report to the class and families on week 9. Each student will keep a notebook and journal during the course.
For example, Emma reads a Little House book and acts out her favorite scene, playing her favorite character (by herself or using props or siblings she gets to play other parts). Another, Joe reads a biography of Abraham Lincoln and dresses up with a tall hat and reads the Gettysburg Address. There are few rules for their creative presentation. A student could simply do an oral review of the book if they prefer.
